3,591 people from Nepal have fled in 2018 and applied for asylum in other countries. This corresponds to approximately 0.013% of all residents. The most destination countries hereof have been Japan, United States and South Korea. Overall, 93 percent of the asylum applications have been rejected. The most successful have been the refugees in Canada and in Greece.

Asylum applications of foreign refugees in Nepal

Nepal is not only a country from which many people escape. There are also refugees from other countries, who apply for asylum here and hope for a better future. Only in the year 2018 there have been 67 asylum applications from refugees of other countries. The most successful have been the refugees from Burma and from Pakistan.

National migrant stock from 1980 to 2015

In 2015 a total of 518,278 migrants lived in Nepal. These are all residents who live permanently in the country but were born in another country. The amount includes granted refugees but no asylum seekers. The data are based on the results of censuses, as well as on estimates and projections of the United Nations Population Division.
