Refugees in Japan

10,901 asylum applications by refugees were received in 2016 in Japan - according to UNHCR. Most of them came from Indonesia, Nepal and from the Philippines. A total of 7,516 decisions have been made on initial applications. Which were around 0% answered positively. 100 percent of asylum applications have been rejected in the first instance. Most successful have been the applications of refugees from persons with unknown origin and from Indonesia.

National migrant stock from 1995 to 2015

In 2015 a total of 2,043,877 migrants lived in Japan. These are all residents who live permanently in the country but were born in another country. The amount includes granted refugees but no asylum seekers. The data are based on the results of censuses, as well as on estimates and projections of the United Nations Population Division.
