Asylum applications and refugees in Latvia

144 asylum applications by refugees were received in 2018 in Latvia - according to UNHCR. Most of them came from Russia, Iraq and from Azerbaijan. A total of 80 decisions have been made on initial applications. Which were around 15% answered positively. 85 percent of asylum applications have been rejected in the first instance. Most successful have been the applications of refugees from Russia and from Iraq.

The total number of initial and continuing applications refers to the year 2018. Please note that the number of decisions (acceptations or rejections) does not have to sum up with the number of applications, because there may still have been open cases from previous years. Also they dont have to be closed within the same calendar year. In addition, asylum procedures can also be closed, if the applicant disappeared or withdrew the application.

Asylum applications of refugees from Latvia

Latvia is one of the countries, were refugees are not only migratiing in. Only in the year 2018 there have been 14 asylum applications, which were received for citizens from Latvia in other countries. Most successful have been the applications in the United Kingdom and in Germany.

National migrant stock from 1990 to 2015

In 2015 a total of 263,126 migrants lived in Latvia. These are all residents who live permanently in the country but were born in another country. The amount includes granted refugees but no asylum seekers. The data are based on the results of censuses, as well as on estimates and projections of the United Nations Population Division.
