1,981 people from Thailand have fled in 2018 and applied for asylum in other countries. This corresponds to approximately 0.003% of all residents. The most destination countries hereof have been Australia, South Korea and the United States. Overall, 98 percent of the asylum applications have been rejected. The most successful have been the refugees in the United States and in South Korea.

Please note that the number of decisions (acceptations or rejections) does not have to sum up with the number of applications, because there may still have been open cases from previous years. Asylum applications of foreign refugees in Thailand

Thailand is not only a country from which many people escape. There are also refugees from other countries, who apply for asylum here and hope for a better future. Only in the year 2018 there have been 1,143 asylum applications from refugees of other countries. The most successful have been the refugees from Afghanistan and from Burma.

National migrant stock from 1980 to 2015

In 2015 a total of 3,913,258 migrants lived in Thailand. These are all residents who live permanently in the country but were born in another country. The amount includes granted refugees but no asylum seekers. The data are based on the results of censuses, as well as on estimates and projections of the United Nations Population Division.
