Asylum applications and refugees in Hungary

436 asylum applications by refugees were received in 2019 in Hungary - according to UNHCR. Most of them came from Afghanistan, Iraq and from Pakistan. A total of 658 decisions have been made on initial applications. Which were around 3% answered positively. 97 percent of asylum applications have been rejected in the first instance. Most successful have been the applications of refugees from Eritrea and from persons with unknown origin.

The total number of initial and continuing applications refers to the year 2019. Please note that the number of decisions (acceptations or rejections) does not have to sum up with the number of applications, because there may still have been open cases from previous years. Also they dont have to be closed within the same calendar year. In addition, asylum procedures can also be closed, if the applicant disappeared or withdrew the application.

Asylum applications of refugees from Hungary

Hungary is one of the countries, were refugees are not only migratiing in. Only in the year 2019 there have been 273 asylum applications, which were received for citizens from Hungary in other countries. Most successful have been the applications in Canada and in the United States.

National migrant stock from 1980 to 2015

In 2015 a total of 449,632 migrants lived in Hungary. These are all residents who live permanently in the country but were born in another country. The amount includes granted refugees but no asylum seekers. The data are based on the results of censuses, as well as on estimates and projections of the United Nations Population Division.
