Bosnian is the official language in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is spoken in 4 other countries as monther tongue by a part of the population. The Bosnian language (native name: bosanski jezik) has its roots in the Indo-European language family.

As a percentage of the total population, the largest share of around 45 percent is in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A total of about 1.7 million people worldwide speak Bosnian as their mother tongue.
