Geography

Serbia is a landlocked country on the Balkan peninsula in southeastern Europe. The land has a total area of 88,360 km² (34,116 mi²). This land area is approximately 111% of the area of Maine. Serbia is thus the 19th biggest country in Europe and in terms of area ranked 113rd worldwide. More than half of all residents (57%) live within cities. Every fifth inhabitant lives in Belgrade.

Serbia is comparatively low at an average elevation of 473 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Midžor) is at 2,169 meters. There is no access to the open sea. There are direct national borders with the eight neighboring countries Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Hungary, North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Romania. The distance between New York City and the Capital Belgrade is about 7,270 km (4,517 mi).

The climate in Serbia

A moderate climate zone determines the weather in Serbia. As usual in the northern hemisphere, the days in the summer months are not only warmer but also longer. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 5 and 30 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 32 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to -2 °C in a month's average.
