Hurricanes in Curacao

Hurricanes occur rarely in Curacao. On average, they happen about once per year. The hardest hit cities is Newport.

The hurricane season usually lasts from early June to late November.

The most severe hurricane to make landfall in Curacao in the past 12 months was »Bonnie«. It reached a wind speed of up to 65 km/h on June 29, 2022 at 5:00 pm local time near Newport and was 51 kilometers in diameter at the time. According to the internationally accepted Saffir-Simpson classification, this corresponded to a tropical storm hurricane. On the open sea, speeds of up to 185 km/h were even measured (category 3).

Current hurricane: Ian

On September 19, 2022 at 8:00 am, hurricane »Ian« formed in the North Atlantic with an initial wind speed of 37 km/h. The storm system initially moved east at 19 km/h 30 km/h and reached a diameter of 167 kilometers in the meantime. At September 26, 2022 at 8:00 pm, it reached its highest wind speed to date of 157 kilometers per hour. This corresponds to a hurricane of category 2.

On September 22, 2022 at 5:00 am, Ian made landfall near the city of Juan Griego in Venezuela. At that time, the hurricane had a wind speed of 56 km/h and a diameter of 167 kilometers.

Ian has since subsided and is no longer under observation by the authorities. Its last position was about 591 km northeast of the Jamaicaon September 24th at 5:00 am .
