Sunrise today: 6:15 h
Sunset today: 17:22 h
(Times for Port-Vila)Sunset today: 17:22 h
The times of sunrise and sunset in Vanuatu are caused by the southern position in the hemisphere. Not that far in the south, but quite noticable the longest days are in winter months, while the shortest days fall into our summer. In the northern hemisphere it is vice versa. Port-Vila is positioned near the 18 southern latitude. For comparison: New York's latitude is 40th in the north, having a much longer distance to the equator.
With up to 13:10 hours the longest days are in December. In June a night in Port-Vila lasts almost 13 hours.
In these days the sun in Port-Vila rises at 6:15. The early sunset at 17:22 makes the day currently a bit too short.

Duration of the sunset
The distance from the equator and the path of the sun determines not only the time of sunrise and sunset. The farther a country is from the equator, the more oblique the sun's path is to the horizon. And this causes a different duration that a sunset takes. Port-Vila lies on the 18th degree of southern latitude and thus a good distance from the equator. While a sunset in the northern USA or central Europe can take almost an hour, in Vanuatu it only lasts an average of 24 minutes. Vanuatu is so close to the equator that there is no noticeable difference even between June and December.International cities for comparison
