A special feature of the airport is the location of the runway. Since there was no more space on the small area of land, the airport was built along the Spanish border across in front of the Monkey Rock. Thus, the only access road to the city runs across the runway. When an airplane takes off or lands, traffic lights, barriers and nail chains are used to close off this main road to motor vehicle and passenger traffic. During the crossing of the runway by vehicles or on foot, air traffic control meticulously monitors that no one leaves the marked areas.
