Compared to the United States, Cuba is massively lagging behind in the development of telecommunications. Under the country code +53, there were a total of 8.64 million connections in 2021. Among them were 7.10 million mobile phones, which corresponds to an average of 0.63 per person. In the US, this figure is 1.1 mobile phones per person.With about 3,244 webhosts, Cuba is below the world's average by population. At the end of 2020, 775 of these, or about 24 percent, were secured with SSL or comparable encryption.

Development of telephone and internet connections
With an average download speed of 1.9 Mbit/second for fixed-network broadband internet, Cuba ranks 180th in an international comparison. The upload rate of only 0.90 Mbit/second was significantly lower (179th place).In mobile internet, i.e., on tablets and smartphones, Cuba comes 136th with a download speed of 5.0 Mbit/second. The upload speed of around 4 Mbit was enough for 135th place.
