Geography
Papua New Guinea is with the bulk of the country bneing part of a larger island. The island state is located on the eastern half of New Guinea. The land has a total area of 462,840 km² (178,703 mi²) and a total coastline of 5,152 km (3,201.3 mi). This land area is approximately 115% of the area of California. Papua New Guinea is thus the largest country in Oceania and the 55th largest country in the world. An exceptionally high proportion of residents (87%) belong to the rural population.Papua New Guinea lies at an average elevation of 667 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Mount Wilhelm) is at 4,509 meters. The island group consists of about 1,400 smaller and partly uninhabited islands. Indonesia ist the only directly neighboring country of Papua New Guinea. The distance between New York City and the Capital Port Moresby is about 14,710 km (9,140 mi).

The climate in Papua New Guinea
In Papua New Guinea, as in all equatorial countries, there is a tropical climate. Unlike in Europe or the USA, there is almost no difference between the seasons. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 30 and 32 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 34 °C.
