Geography

Kiribati is an archipelago in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The dwarf state has a total area of only 810 km² (313 mi²) and a total coastline of 1,143 km (710.2 mi). This land area is about 1.0 times the size of New York City. Kiribati is thus the eighth biggest country in Oceania and in terms of area ranked 190th worldwide. More than half of all residents (56%) live within cities. Almost every second resident lives in Tarawa.

The highest elevation (Banaba on Ocean Island) reaches only 81 meters. The archipelago consists of 34 islands. Kiribati has no direct neighbors. The distance between New York City and the Capital Tarawa is about 11,840 km (7,357 mi).

The climate in Kiribati

In Kiribati, as in all equatorial countries, there is a tropical climate. Unlike in Europe or the USA, there is almost no difference between the seasons. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 31 and 32 degrees. In the colder months, the average night temperatures drop down to 26 °C.
