Geography

French Polynesia is a country in south pacific Polynesia. The land has a total area of 4,000 km² (1,544 mi²) and a total coastline of 2,525 km (1,569.0 mi). This land area is approximately 100% of the area of Rhode Island. French Polynesia is thus one of the largest countries in Oceania and the 176th biggest in the world. More than half of all residents (62%) live within cities. Every tenth inhabitant lives in Faaa alone.

The country has about 40 islands. French Polynesia has no direct neighbors. The distance between New York City and the Capital Papeete is about 10,130 km (6,294 mi).

The climate in French Polynesia

In French Polynesia, as in all equatorial countries, there is a tropical climate. Unlike in Europe or the USA, there is almost no difference between the seasons. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 29 and 31 degrees. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 23 °C in a month's average.
