Geography

The Fijis is an archipelago about 2000 km northeast of New Zealand in the Pacific Ocean. The land has a total area of 18,270 km² (7,054 mi²) and a total coastline of 1,129 km (701.5 mi). This land area is approximately 127% of the area of Connecticut. The Fijis is thus one of the largest countries in Oceania and the 157th biggest in the world. More than half of all residents (58%) live within cities. Every tenth inhabitant lives in Suva alone.

The highest mountain peak (Tomanivi) is at 1,324 meters. The archipelago consists of about 330 partially uninhabited islands. The Fijis has no direct neighbors. The distance between New York City and the Capital Suva is about 12,790 km (7,947 mi).

The climate on the Fijis

On the Fijis, as in all equatorial countries, there is a tropical climate. Unlike in Europe or the USA, there is almost no difference between the seasons. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 28 and 31 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 32 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 20 °C in a month's average.
