Telecommunication in RussiaCompared to the United States, Russia is at the forefront of the development of telecommunications. Under the country code +7, there were a total of 264.63 million connections in 2020. Among them were 238.73 million mobile phones, which corresponds to an average of 1.7 per person. In the US, this figure is 1.1 mobile phones per person.
With about 14.87 million webhosts, Russia is below the world's average by population. At the end of 2020, 1.92 million of these, or about 13 percent, were secured with SSL or comparable encryption.

Development of telephone and internet connectionsWith an average download speed of 74.09 Mbit/second for fixed-network broadband internet, Russia ranked 52nd in an international comparison. The upload rate was 80.55 Mbit/second (22nd place).
In mobile internet, i.e. on tablets and smartphones, Russia comes 92nd with a download speed of 21.27 Mbit/second. The upload speed of around 8 Mbit was only enough for 115th place.
The Speedtest Global Index published regularly by Ookla is based on several million individual measurements in October 2022 from 180 countries.

Broadband internet in Russia 2002 - 2020Russia is lagging behind in the expansion of broadband Internet connections. Around 85% of all residents have access to the Internet. Around 24% have their own fast Internet connection, which is at least faster than the former ISDN (more than 256 kbit/s). All fixed connections via DSL, cable or satellite were counted here, but not those connected to the Internet via mobile communications.
