Geography

Lithuania is a country at the Baltic Sea in the south of the Baltic. The land has a total area of 65,286 km² (25,207 mi²) and a total coastline of 90 km (55.9 mi). This land area is approximately 82% of the area of Maine. Lithuania is thus the 23rd biggest country in Europe and in terms of area ranked 124th worldwide. More than half of all residents (68%) live within cities. Every fifth inhabitant lives in Vilnius.

Lithuania is comparatively low at an average elevation of 110 meters above sea level. The highest elevation in the country (Aukštasis kalnas) is 294 meters. The country has about 30 islands. There are direct national borders with the four neighboring countries Belarus, Latvia, Poland and Russia. The distance between New York City and the Capital Vilnius is about 6,960 km (4,325 mi).

The climate in Lithuania

A moderate climate zone determines the weather in Lithuania. As usual in the northern hemisphere, the days in the summer months are not only warmer but also longer. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between -1 and 24 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 25 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to -6 °C in a month's average.
