Geography

Albania is a country in southeastern Europe on the southern Adriatic coast. The land has a total area of 28,750 km² (11,100 mi²) and a total coastline of 362 km (224.9 mi). This land area is approximately 114% of the area of Maryland. Albania is thus the 18th smallest country in Europe and ranked 145th in the world. More than half of all residents (63%) live within cities. Every seventh resident lives in Tirana alone.

Albania lies at an average elevation of 708 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Maja e Korabit) is at 2,764 meters. The country has 13 islands in the open sea. There are direct national borders with the four neighboring countries Montenegro, Greece, North Macedonia and the Kosovo. The distance between New York City and the Capital Tirana is about 7,440 km (4,623 mi).

The climate in Albania

A moderate climate zone determines the weather in Albania. As usual in the northern hemisphere, the days in the summer months are not only warmer but also longer. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 11 and 33 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 36 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 1 °C in a month's average.
