Telecommunication in KyrgyzstanCompared to the European Union, Kyrgyzstan is massively lagging behind in the development of telecommunications. Under the country code +996, there were a total of 8.92 million connections in 2020. Among them were 8.62 million mobile phones, which corresponds to an average of 1.3 per person. In the EU, this figure is 1.2 mobile phones per person.
In the expansion of broadband Internet connections, Kyrgyzstan is back. Around 38% of all residents have access to the Internet. Approximately 4% have their own fast Internet connection, which is at least faster than the previous ISDN (more than 2048 kbit/s).
With about 115,573 webhosts, Kyrgyzstan is below the world's average by population. At the end of 2020, 2,771 million of these, or about 2 percent, were secured with SSL or comparable encryption.
