Geography

Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country in Central Asia. The land has a total area of 199,950 km² (77,201 mi²). This land area is approximately 97% of the area of Minnesota. Kyrgyzstan is thus the 23rd biggest country in Asia and in terms of area ranked 87th worldwide. Most of the population (63%) resides within rural regions.

Kyrgyzstan lies at an average elevation of 2988 m above sea level and is therefore one of the highest countries in the world. The highest mountain peak (Dschengisch Tschokusu) is at 7,439 meters. There is no access to the open sea. There are direct national borders with the four neighboring countries China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The distance between New York City and the Capital Bishkek is about 10,210 km (6,344 mi).

The climate in Kyrgyzstan

A moderate climate zone determines the weather in Kyrgyzstan. As usual in the northern hemisphere, the days in the summer months are not only warmer but also longer. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 1 and 31 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 35 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to -9 °C in a month's average.
