Geography
Iraq is a country north of the Persian Gulf in Western Asia. The land has a total area of 435,052 km² (167,974 mi²) and a total coastline of 58 km (36.0 mi). This land area is approximately 108% of the area of California. Iraq is thus the 16th biggest country in Asia and in terms of area ranked 59th worldwide. A considerable share of the inhabitants (71%) belongs to the urban population. Almost every fifth resident lives in Baghdad.Iraq is comparatively low at an average elevation of 312 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Cheekha Dar) is at 3,611 meters. There are direct national borders with the six neighboring countries Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Turkey. The distance between New York City and the Capital Baghdad is about 9,650 km (5,996 mi).

The climate in Iraq
The climate in Iraq is subtropical, so it is much drier and warmer than in the most parts of the US or Central Europe. Only in a few humid months per year is the intensity of rain a bit higher. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 17 and 46 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 48 °C.
