Geography

Azerbaijan is a landlocked country north of Iraq on the Caspian Sea. The land has a total area of 86,600 km² (33,436 mi²). This land area is approximately 108% of the area of Maine. Azerbaijan is thus the 20th smallest country in Asia and ranked 114th in the world. More than half of all residents (57%) live within cities. Almost every fourth inhabitant lives in Baku.

Azerbaijan is comparatively low at an average elevation of 384 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Bazardüzü) is at 4,466 meters. There is no access to the open sea. There are direct national borders with the five neighboring countries Armenia, Georgia, Iran, Russia and Turkey. The distance between New York City and the Capital Baku is about 9,380 km (5,828 mi).

The climate in Azerbaijan

A moderate climate zone determines the weather in Azerbaijan. As usual in the northern hemisphere, the days in the summer months are not only warmer but also longer. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 8 and 33 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 37 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to -3 °C in a month's average.
