Geography

The South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands are an island state in the South Atlantic near the Antarctic. The land has a total area of 3,903 km² (1,507 mi²). This land area is approximately 98% of the area of Rhode Island. South Georgia is thus the 24th smallest country in the Americas and ranked 177th in the world. With 0.008 inhabitants per km² it is also the most sparsely populated country on earth.

The highest mountain peak (Mount Paget) is at 2,935 meters. The island group consists of about 40 islands. The South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands have no direct neighbors. The distance between New York City and the Capital King Edward Point is about 11,160 km (6,935 mi).
