Saint Lucia is an island state of the Lesser Antilles in the South Caribbean. The dwarf state has a total area of only 620 km² (239 mi²) and a total coastline of 158 km (98.2 mi). This land area is about 3.5 times the size of Washington, D.C. Saint Lucia is thus the 19th smallest country in the Americas and ranked 196th in the world. A considerable share of the inhabitants (81%) belongs to the rural population.The highest elevation in the country (Mount Gimie) is 950 meters. The island group consists of 8 islands. Saint Lucia has no direct neighbors. The distance between New York City and the Capital Castries is about 3,230 km (2,007 mi).
