Refugees in Panama

3,457 asylum applications by refugees were received in 2016 in Panama - according to UNHCR. Most of them came from Colombia, Nicaragua and from Venezuela. A total of 28 decisions have been made on initial applications. Which were around 82% answered positively. 18 percent of asylum applications have been rejected in the first instance. Most successful have been the applications of refugees from Colombia.

National migrant stock from 1980 to 2015

In 2015 a total of 184,710 migrants lived in Panama. These are all residents who live permanently in the country but were born in another country. The amount includes granted refugees but no asylum seekers. The data are based on the results of censuses, as well as on estimates and projections of the United Nations Population Division.
