Refugees in Panama

5,557 asylum applications by refugees were received in 2017 in Panama - according to UNHCR. Most of them came from Venezuela, Colombia and from El Salvador. A total of 109 decisions have been made on initial applications. Which were around 74\% answered positively. 26 percent of asylum applications have been rejected in the first instance. Most successful have been the applications of refugees from El Salvador and from Colombia.

The total number of initial and continuing applications refers to the year 2017. Please note that the number of decisions (acceptations or rejections) does not have to sum up with the number of applications, because there may still have been open cases from previous years. Also they dont have to be closed within the same calendar year. In addition, asylum procedures can also be closed, if the applicant disappeared or withdrew the application.

National migrant stock from 1980 to 2015

In 2015 a total of 184,710 migrants lived in Panama. These are all residents who live permanently in the country but were born in another country. The amount includes granted refugees but no asylum seekers. The data are based on the results of censuses, as well as on estimates and projections of the United Nations Population Division.
