Telecommunication in Nicaragua

Compared to the United States, Nicaragua is massively lagging behind in the development of telecommunications. Under the country code +505, there were a total of 6.19 million connections in 2020. Among them were 5.98 million mobile phones, which corresponds to an average of 0.90 per person. In the US, , this figure is 1.1 mobile phones per person.

With about 296,068 webhosts, Nicaragua is below the world's average by population. At the end of 2020, 610 million of these, or about 0 percent, were secured with SSL or comparable encryption.

With an average download speed of 39.03 Mbit/second for fixed-network broadband internet, Nicaragua ranked 91st in an international comparison. The upload rate of only 13.52 Mbit/second was significantly lower (101st place).
In mobile internet, i.e. on tablets and smartphones, Nicaragua comes 106th with a download speed of 16.29 Mbit/second. The upload speed of around 9 Mbit was enough for 81st place.
