Geography

Honduras is a country in Central America and, like some of its neighboring countries, it links the Pacific to the Atlantic. The land has a total area of 112,490 km² (43,433 mi²) and a total coastline of 669 km (415.7 mi). This land area is approximately 106% of the area of Ohio. Honduras is thus the 18th biggest country in the Americas and in terms of area ranked 103rd worldwide. More than half of all residents (59%) live within cities. Every ninth resident lives in Tegucigalpa alone.

Honduras lies at an average elevation of 684 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Cerro Las Minas) is at 2,849 meters. The country has about 40 islands. There are direct national borders with the three neighboring countries Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. The distance between New York City and the Capital Tegucigalpa is about 3,230 km (2,007 mi).

The climate in Honduras

In Honduras, as in all equatorial countries, there is a tropical climate. Unlike in Europe or the USA, there is almost no difference between the seasons. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 27 and 31 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 33 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 18 °C in a month's average.
