Geography

Haiti is an island state in the Greater Antilles of the Caribbean. The eastern part of the main island belongs to the Dominican Republic. The land has a total area of 27,750 km² (10,714 mi²) and a total coastline of 1,771 km (1,100.4 mi). This land area is approximately 110% of the area of Maryland. Haiti is thus the 25th biggest country in the Americas and in terms of area ranked 148th worldwide. More than half of all residents (58%) live within cities.

Haiti is comparatively low at an average elevation of 470 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Pic la Selle) is at 2,680 meters. The island group consists of about 40 islands. The Dominican Republic ist the only directly neighboring country of Haiti. The distance between New York City and the Capital Port-au-Prince is about 2,470 km (1,535 mi).
