Asylum applications and refugees from El Salvador

15,898 people from El Salvador fled in 2021 and applied for asylum in other countries, according to UNHCR data. This corresponds to approximately 0.252% of all residents. The most common destination countries have been Mexico, United States and the United Kingdom. The most successful have been the refugees in Ireland and Honduras.

A total of 5,688 people fled to the United States from El Salvador. With 291 positive decisions, 14.98 percent of all new applications have been accepted. Another 1,652 applications were rejected, and no decisions were made on those remaining in 2021.
