Geography

Belize is a country in Central America right on the Caribbean Sea. The land has a total area of 22,970 km² (8,869 mi²) and a total coastline of 386 km (239.8 mi). This land area is approximately 91% of the area of Maryland. Belize is thus the 26th biggest country in the Americas and in terms of area ranked 152nd worldwide. Only slightly less than half of all residents (46%) live within cities.

Belize is comparatively low at an average elevation of 173 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Doyle’s Delight) is at 1,124 meters. The country has about 450 partially uninhabited islands. There are direct national borders with the two neighboring countries Guatemala and Mexico. The distance between New York City and the Capital Belmopan is about 2,970 km (1,845 mi).

The climate in Belize

In Belize, as in all equatorial countries, there is a tropical climate. Unlike in Europe or the USA, there is almost no difference between the seasons. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 28 and 33 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 35 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 20 °C in a month's average.
