Geography

Bahamas are an archipelago in the caribbean sea. The land has a total area of 13,878 km² (5,358 mi²) and a total coastline of 3,542 km (2,200.9 mi). This land area is approximately 112% of the area of Sydney. Bahamas are thus the 28th biggest country in the Americas and in terms of area ranked 161st worldwide. An exceptionally high proportion of residents (83%) belongs to the urban population. More than 3 out of 5 residents live in Nassau.

The highest elevation (Mount Alvernia) reaches only 63 meters. The archipelago consists of about 700 partially uninhabited islands. Bahamas have no direct neighbors. The distance between New York City and the Capital Nassau is about 1,770 km (1,100 mi).

The climate in the Bahamas

The climate in the Bahamas is subtropical, so it is much drier and warmer than in the most parts of the US or Central Europe. Only in a few humid months per year is the intensity of rain a bit higher. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 26 and 33 degrees. In the colder months, the average night temperatures drop down to 18 °C.
