Geography

Zambia is a landlocked country in southeast Africa. The land has a total area of 752,610 km² (290,584 mi²). This land area is approximately 108% of the area of Texas. Zambia is thus one of the largest countries in Africa and the 39th biggest in the world. Only slightly less than half of all residents (45%) live within cities.

Zambia is comparatively high at an average elevation of 1138 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Mafinga) is at 2,339 meters. There is no access to the open sea. There are direct national borders with the eight neighboring countries Angola, Botswana, Congo (Dem. Republic), Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The distance between New York City and the Capital Lusaka is about 12,150 km (7,550 mi).

The climate in Zambia

In Zambia, as in all equatorial countries, there is a tropical climate. Unlike in Europe or the USA, there is almost no difference between the seasons. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 23 and 34 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 37 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 10 °C in a month's average.
