Geography

Tunisia is a country in the north of Africa on the southern Mediterranean coast. The distance to the southern Italian islands is just under 70 km. The land has a total area of 163,610 km² (63,170 mi²) and a total coastline of 1,148 km (713.3 mi). This land area is approximately 79% of the area of Minnesota. Tunisia is thus the 24th smallest country in Africa and ranked 93rd in the world. More than half of all residents (70%) live within cities.

Tunisia is comparatively low at an average elevation of 246 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Djebel Chambi) is at 1,544 meters. The country has about 30 islands. There are direct national borders with the two neighboring countries Algeria and Libya. The distance between New York City and the Capital Tunis is about 7,020 km (4,362 mi).

The climate in Tunisia

The climate in Tunisia is subtropical, so it is much drier and warmer than in the most parts of the US or Central Europe. Only in a few humid months per year is the intensity of rain a bit higher. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 17 and 36 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 39 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 7 °C in a month's average.
