Compared to the United States, Togo is massively lagging behind in the development of telecommunications. Under the country code +228, there were a total of 6.56 million connections in 2021. Among them were 6.52 million mobile phones, which corresponds to an average of 0.77 per person. In the US, this figure is 1.1 mobile phones per person.With about 1,168 webhosts, Togo is below the world's average by population. At the end of 2020, 219 of these, or about 19 percent, were secured with SSL or comparable encryption.

Development of telephone and internet connections
With an average download speed of 28.95 Mbit/second for fixed-network broadband internet, Togo ranks 112nd in an international comparison. The upload rate of only 4.3 Mbit/second was significantly lower (162nd place).In mobile internet, i.e., on tablets and smartphones, Togo comes 83rd with a download speed of 23.83 Mbit/second. The upload speed of around 6 Mbit was only enough for 130th place.
