Geography

South Africa is a country on the southern tip of Africa. The land has a total area of 1,219,090 km² (470,693 mi²) and a total coastline of 2,798 km (1,738.6 mi). This land area is approximately 175% of the area of Texas. South Africa is thus one of the largest countries in Africa and the 25th biggest in the world. More than half of all residents (68%) live within cities.

South Africa is comparatively high at an average elevation of 1034 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Mafadi) is at 3,450 meters. There are direct national borders with the six neighboring countries Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini and Zimbabwe. The distance between New York City and the Capital Pretoria is about 12,830 km (7,972 mi).

The climate in South Africa

In South Africa, a subtropical climate dominates. In the summer months there is hardly any precipitation and the usual evaporation ensures a strong dryness. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 20 and 29 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 33 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 5 °C in a month's average.
