Geography

Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha is an island state in the South Atlantic Ocean and is about 1850 km from the African mainland. The dwarf state has a total area of only 391 km² (151 mi²) and a total coastline of 60 km (37.3 mi). This land area is about 2.2 times the size of Washington, D.C. In terms of area, Saint Helena is thus the third smallest country in Africa after British Indian Ocean Territory and Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha and the 40th smallest country worldwide.

The country consists of only one island. Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha has no direct neighbors. The distance between New York City and the Capital Jamestown is about 9,440 km (5,866 mi).

For a country with a north-south extent of over 3200 km, it is not possible to describe the climate in general. A predominantly tropical climate is dominating Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha as it is usual, in all equatorial countries. There is almost no difference between the seasons as in Central Europe. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 23 and 28 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 32 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 18 °C in a month's average.
