16,946 asylum applications by refugees were received in 2016 in Malawi - according to UNHCR. Most of them came from Mozambique, Congo (Dem. Republic) and from Burundi. A total of 897 decisions have been made on initial applications. Which were around 97% answered positively. 3 percent of asylum applications have been rejected in the first instance. Most successful have been the applications of refugees from the Congo and from Rwanda.

The amount includes granted refugees but no asylum seekers. The data are based on the results of censuses, as well as on estimates and projections of the United Nations Population Division.
