Geography

Guinea is a country on the Atlantic coast of West Africa. The land has a total area of 245,860 km² (94,927 mi²) and a total coastline of 320 km (198.8 mi). This land area is approximately 61% of the area of California. Guinea is thus the 28th smallest country in Africa and ranked 79th in the world. Most of the population (63%) resides within rural regions.

Guinea is comparatively low at an average elevation of 472 meters above sea level. The highest mountain peak (Mont Richard-Molard) is at 1,752 meters. The country has 14 islands in the open sea. There are direct national borders with the six neighboring countries Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Senegal and Sierra Leone. The distance between New York City and the Capital Conakry is about 6,830 km (4,244 mi).

The climate in Guinea

In Guinea, as in all equatorial countries, there is a tropical climate. Unlike in Europe or the USA, there is almost no difference between the seasons. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 28 and 34 degrees. In some parts of the country, the temperature rises to 42 °C. In the colder months, and depending in the region, the temperature drops to 17 °C in a month's average.
