Geography

Comoros is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean northwest of Madagascar. The small state has a total area of 1,861 km² (719 mi²) and a total coastline of 340 km (211.3 mi). This land area is about 1.4 times the size of Los Angeles. Comoros is thus one of the smallest countries in Africa by area and ranked 182nd worldwide. With 441 inhabitants per km², it is also one of the most densely populated countries. Most of the population (70%) resides within rural regions.

The highest mountain peak (Karthala) is at 2,361 meters. The archipelago consists of about 20 islands. Comoros has no direct neighbors. The distance between New York City and the Capital Moroni is about 13,150 km (8,171 mi).

The climate in Comoros

In Comoros, as in all equatorial countries, there is a tropical climate. Unlike in Europe or the USA, there is almost no difference between the seasons. The daylight hours vary little, and the temperature differences between summer and winter are also lower. Depending on the season, the average daytime temperatures range between 30 and 32 degrees. In the colder months, the average night temperatures drop down to 21 °C.
